the 5th wave

5th wave

We'd better get going. I think Evan Walker is going to blow this place out.
-- Ben Parish in The 5th Wave --

God, Evan Walker's so handsome I need to find a corner and rake dirt.
-- a friend's Path status that made me go watch The 5th Wave, ain't nobody got time to figure out what she meant --

So The 5th Wave is not a singular movie. I actually have told myself that The Hunger Games will be the last multi-part movie I watch. I've been sickened by the way movie makers shamelessly try to add piles of gold coins to their already mountainous treasure hoard.

The movie was intense but the plot was too easy to guess. The main attraction was its lead character, played by Chloe Grace-Moretz. Mainly for straight guys, I think. The great Evan Walker is not that handsome in my opinion.

The movie itself looked like Frankenstein's monster, if Dr. Frankenstein had created movies instead of monsters. Think of it this way: the opening scene was derived from 28 Weeks Later. Then flashback to the main character's high school life and partying of There's Something About Mary. Later we got a disaster movie, maybe 2012 for the first two waves. Third wave reminded me of a movie of which title I cannot recall, about a disease outbreak in a city. Fourth wave was Resident Evil. About Fifth wave... all I can tell without being a spoiler was, fifth wave's been predictable ever since the scene where Ben Parish pushed the button.

project almanac

project almanac

What would you do if you were a smart man surrounded by equally smart friends, but your father had been smarter than you -- as in he had built a time machine and you found it after his death?

Yep. My thought actually. Go back in time to buy lottery. At first it was fun: the lotto money was more than enough to help mother with her mortgage, hold a party, buy pretty clothes, etc. The time machine also enabled them to go to a music festival that they have missed, having the main singer dedicating a song for one of them, etc.

But soon things get ugly. Like the movie Butterfly Effects, small things led to disasters that took lives of many.

What about you? What would you do if you're in charge of a time machine?

For me, what I would do is going back in time and tell the teenage version of me to stop worrying over small stuff, that everything's gonna be alright.

But wait, I couldn't do that, because I would disappear if I did. This is an obstacle set by the movie Project Almanac, whoever doing time travel is not allowed to be seen by his/her younger self.

mIRC
I guess I should be content by leaving her a mIRC chat instead.

By the way, throughout the movie there's not a single man uttering his desire to embark on a journey to the future. Maybe they're all sure the world would end in the near future. Or this time machine was only capable of moving backwards, the one with the ability to go to the future's being sold separately?

ken and barbie
Just like Ken. Ken came in another box.

Also I haven't found the exact meaning of 'almanac'. I remember looking this word up the internet many years ago, only to end up on a Wikipedia page about Benjamin Franklin's almanac. Google wasn't so omnipotent back then.

Needless to say, I gave up.

of forgiveness and saw 3

saw 3

So someone asked in a forum "What is the one movie that you have seen that has changed your way of thinking?"

As strange as it may seem, mine is one of the Saw series. Saw 3. The one with rotten pigs juice in it.

Quoting sawfilms wikia: Hanging from a conveyor-like bar, emerged numerous rotting pig corpses. Each pig was dropped into the silo with the saw blades and grounded up, leaving the large amount of thick grey liquid remains to pour down a chute into the silo containing the judge, gradually filling the silo. More dead pigs were pulled in on the rotating chain and dropped, one after the other, into the saws. Soon, enough pigs had been liquefied to fill the silo nearly enough to drown Judge Halden.

The guy who had killed the protagonist's child hadn't get fair punishment on Judge Halden's court. The protagonist, Jeff, was given the choice to save the judge or not. Saving the judge meant he had to jump into the silo, full of unappetizing pork soup with horrible aroma.

saw 3

So how did this change my way of thinking? IMO Jeff could have avoided being in that mess (and much, much more mess later, you'll understand once you watch the movie) had he forgiven his child's killer, the judge, and basically everyone in the screwed-up court system earlier.

Forgiving is not an easy business even when your loved ones are safe, and certainly not when they are hurt. But life's kinda like Jigsaw in the sense that withholding forgiveness is like piling more and more rotting pig carcasses on one's head while he/she stand in a silo. You keep doing that, you'll drown in the soup.

dragon blade

dragon blade

Am I the only one here who thinks that John Cusack in this movie looks like Russel Crowe in Gladiator?

Also... Am I the only one here who thinks that the missing tooth of the boy who played as Publius is annoying? I mean it's not a big deal, but it tickled me everytime I saw him opening his mouth.

And... Am I the only one here who thinks that Jackie Chan being a hipster for still acting as someone girls' love interest despite other actors his age stopped doing that a while ago? And being a great one at hipstery, too, for having not only one love interest, but two, with one of the girls opened her clothes for him to see!

unruly kids or unruly parents? -- part two

the-7-dwarfs

... Who knows that the chance to take revenge came real soon? But at that time I decided not to seize the opportunity! :(

The 7 Dwarfs is an animated movie of which plot wasn't thought througouhly, I suspect. A main character that's so awkward to the point that it became annoying. Inconsistent drawing style. Stereotypes. Lame joke. Add to that slow pace. And I mean slooow I could just sleep on my chair.

But you know what? About half of people in the cinema were adults. Seeing from experience, I'd anticipate at least some children whines now and then, and if I got lucky, one or two top-of-the-lungs screams.

... Instead I experience silence. Peace. Not a single mouth spoke. They are too mesmerized by the jolly characters on screen.

Yes children can behave when it's a show dedicated to THEM, not some R-rated or PG-13 movies.

... I still regret not getting back to the kids by covering the projecting window on the back with a gum or something. >:)

the way we dance

the way we dance

This review maybe partially biased, since I really love the genre of the movie.

...

Okay, not maybe. This review is certainly partially biased. On the second thought, not even only partially. It is fully biased. :D

The Way We Dance is a Hong Kong film following Fleur, daughter of tofu seller who loved dancing. She attended university and comedic scenes appear. When I read reviews online, people even were comparing one actor in this movie with Stephen Chow. But soon I learned that this movie is not only about funny scenes. Oh how I love the way Tommy 'Guns' Ly convey this message: "How far will you go for dancing?" Love it tons!

I also love Fleur's answer: "From the moment I get up, I think about dance. On a bus or the subway, I think about dance. While slicing tofu, I think about dance. While taking a shower, I think about dance. When I see my reflection on a mirror, I think about dance."

For the first 20 minutes I must admit I am bored, though. I even stopped watching to chat with my lover. But since the scene with Rooftoppers I couldn't avert my eyes!

penguins of madagascar

penguins of madagascar

Isn't it an ill time to release this movie? Less than a month after the incident involving a seal and a penguin went viral, I mean.

And about that one seal in the North Wind team. It is a harpseal alright, don't harpseals feed on penguins like leopard seals do?

Also, North Wind? How does SQL Server's example database's name find its way up there?

guardians of the galaxy

Guardians of The Galaxy is overrated. It is nothing more than a talking raccoon, a greenish orphan girl from the Avatar planet, and a talking tree.

And a human. And that guy who takes things literally. I already regret judging movies by their trailer, now I regret watching movies by how often it's being mentioned in 9gag.

the equalizer

After Jet Li and Jackie Chan starring The Forbidden Kingdom in 2008, Sylvester Stallone in 2006 Rocky Balboa, and Bruce Wilis at dunno what year's Die Hard, now Denzel Washington takes turn acting with little regards to his age.

The Equalizer portrayed Denzel as someone skillful in killing who clashed with Russian mobster for the sake of a female hooker at the bottom link of their organization.

Likeness with those gramps mentioned above? Nobody lays their hands on their female counterparts. :D

lucy

I stare at good-looking guys; because I often wonder how different my life would be if I were as attractive as they are.
-- I'm straight I swear --

Me too! But at good looking girls, other parts: staring, different life, and straight are the same.
-- me --

This is the most confusing commercial movie I have ever seen. Full of documentary clips about animals giving birth etc, I cannot say that this movie is my favorite. Funny, because I usually like Luc Besson's movies.

Also I noticed Scarlett Johansson's uneven teeth here. Never once noticed it in Marvel's where she's Black Widow.

step up: all in

step up all in

I'm getting more and more in love with the character portrayed by Adam Sevani, Moose. The first time I saw him was in Step Up 2, I think. He was wearing clothes that made us think his body must be skinny. But my, look at him somewhere between the middle and the end of that movie! He flashed us, although only through a mirror, his chiseled chest and belly.

And having a dance video in a high-voltage factory? Man, only a guy with a mad scientist kind of brain could write such impossible coreography! Wait, but that's what he was. What he portrayed, anyway. In the dance video. Yes, it was half-dance-half-theatrical act. Or maybe third-quarter-dance-a-quarter-theatrical act. But the dance was awesome. Kinda made me remember Michael Jackson's Thriller.

Alexandra Brava reminds me of Effie Trinket in The Hunger Games.

The dance in the boxer ring reminds me of The Godfather. Or Pulp Fiction. Which I have never seen either. But I'm sure I've ever read about that Italian mafia-style 'head in the bucket' thing somewhere.

And they all reminds me of how much, much, much I have loved dance. Maybe I still do.

God help me!

dawn of the planet of the apes

redwinedinner.blogspot.com

... holds second position in the list of movies I've watched with least human words. What movie holds first position? Wall-E, of course!

About DotPotA, there's something in this movie that doesn't sit right with me. After a coup against their leader (also an ape), apes attacked a human colony and made them prisoners. Some humans were able to ask for help from another place by radio, though.

In the meantime, the couped leader succeeded in returning to throne after having a duel with his couper. His guards freed human prisoners. Then a human told that peace-loving ape leader that a human troop was coming to help people there and that apes should run.

That ape king's answer astonished me. He implied that they couldn't return to their old home for fear that they would be hunted down. He said, "Humans will not forgive."

This movie is a tongue in cheek toward humanity. I think he was right. Even though it wasn't his fault, humans wouldn't care. For us humans, it's better safe than sorry, so he would be eliminated without second thought should we ever capture him. We humans would not listen to a small number of us who're trying to explain the truth. We would bully that small amount, call them crazy and incinerate them if needed. Most of all we would not forgive.

Or would we?

Note to self: find out how many apes are needed to change a light bulb. Your light bulb.

edge of tomorrow

I never thought I'd be laughing watching a man got rolled over by a truck. And it wasn't in some cartoons. And he didn't have some super power that made him immune to the impact. He indeed died. And not a nice death his body was having.

Splat!

>.< It was a good movie, one that made me felt for Tom Cruise. Before this I disliked him, maybe because of his roles in Top Gun and Magnolia. Especially Magnolia. How I hate his character there!

3 days to kill

3 days to kill

With the same screenwriter as Taxi has, 3 Days to Kill sure shares some of its hilarious jokes. The story evolves around a dying man who needs to be a hitman for a certain woman in exchange of medication for his terminal cancer. His tasks are getting more and more complicated as the family he had abandoned, whom he contacted with reconciliation in mind prior to his meeting with this injection woman, come in his way.

This movie also has some surreal scenes, as seen through main character's eyes, while he is fighting side effects of the medicine. But maybe it is reality. I don't know. His employer is a very strange yet beautiful woman. I personally love her style when she wears that white-blode wig. She shows profusely that she is attracted to the main character. But she is probably a bisexual for arranging a cabaret turning into striptease show in her place. But again, maybe the striptease is just main character's hallucination.

i, frankenstein

It is very vampire-vs-werewolf-y than the traditional making of movies with similar titles. Victor Frankenstein, the mad scientist only appeared for less than 10 mins in this movie, half of the time as a dead corpse on the ground.

The creature Victor made soon got trapped in the war between demons and gargoyles. Queen of gargoyles named him Adam. After betrayal from both sides he eventually sided with the gargoyles.

Adam Frankenstein was very muscular. When female protagonist tended his injuries (on his back, thus the shirtless lapse of time), I elbowed my lover. "What do you think if after the movie we went to cemetery to fetch guys with muscles?" He was not very muscular. And was not amused. And he kept pinching my cheek. XD

man in steel

Watching this movie makes me think: so did Lana know Clark Kent is Superman from the beginning or didn't she?

the call

the call

Carefully built suspense that could have made this movie so awesome is tainted by its main character's decision on last 1/3 duration. Any woman, even those who don't work as 911 operators should know better than tracking a serial killer to the place he abandoned his car. Wait, not just a place. A rural, mountainous place, aforementioned serial killer's property with no neigbours nearby. Alone. At night. After all police left that place. Without first informing friends or relatives where she's going. Not even her boyfriend, who happen to be the police investigating that scene.

And when logic kicks in after finding an entrance to a dungeon, the phone must fall inside. Taking it, goes into hiding upon hearing footsteps, the main character's logic vaporizes again into thin air. Cancel that phone call! Follow the serial killer deeper into the dungeon!

looper

Assumption is the fastest way to self-ridicule... When will I learn?

Seeing Bruce Willis on the cast, I bought tickets to this movie because I wanted to be numb. Not thinking, not considering my options, not planning anything. Just stare at the screen blankly for awhile.

But this movie invoke thoughts. Between causality of time-travel events and murdering future criminal while they're still infants, the lightest one is this: what on earth is the name of the liquid drug that is taken by dropping it into one's eye? And I don't mean things like eyedrop solutions. The drug is the kind that can make you high.

orphan

"Are you a pedophile?"

'No.'

"I'll kill you! I'll kill your family!"

I know this matter shouldn't be laughed about, but had Esther found an abusive godfather, wouldn't they live happily ever after? The man would get a perfect object for his inept desires because Esther would never grow up physically. Perhaps Esther, out of her new happy life, would eventually stop killing people.

Don't understand what I'm talking about? Go watch the movie! :D
